Keep your lawn and the lake healthy!

Our WeedZero Fertilization Program meets the lake’s recommendations for optimal health, but now also includes a 10-foot barrier between your lawn and the lake during fertilization visits.

Dear Lake Sherwood Residents,

We have received the fertilization recommendations made by the Sherwood Lake Quality and Environment Committee and are happy to let you know that with just one adjustment, Schendel’s WeedZero Program meets the recommendations. We understand the importance of protecting the health of the lake and believe we can do so while still providing our customers with green, healthy lawns.

Currently, our WeedZero Program consists of eight services throughout the year, but only three of these include fertilizer, and the amount of nitrogen used in our applications falls within the range recommended by the state of Kansas. To meet the recommendations of the committee, we will not apply fertilizer within a 10-foot barrier from the shoreline up into the yard during our Early Summer Fertilization and Winter Fertilization services. This barrier will provide a sufficient area to absorb runoff from the rest of the yard before it enters the lake. There will be no changes to the services for the rest of the yard.

In the barrier area not treated with fertilizer, you may see some slight color variations in the spring, and possibly some weeds if the turf in that area is not thick and full. This change does not affect the WeedZero Guarantee, so if you do see weeds, we will return at no charge. Overseeding the area in the fall will also help keep the turf thick. And if you decide you would like to enhance the barrier area with a rock bed or wall, firepit, or patio, we’d be happy to work with you to design an area that will both help protect the lake and increase the value of your property.

We are fully supportive of minimizing the possibility of water pollution and keeping the lake healthy, and will implement this change to the WeedZero Program effective September 1st. If you prefer us to continue fertilizing the 10-foot barrier, please contact our office and we will note that on your account and continue the services without any changes.
