Beat the Summer Heat: A Comprehensive Guide to Lawn Irrigation During The Warm Weather
Summer is on the horizon, and with it comes scorching temperatures that can wreak havoc on your lawn. But do not worry, homeowners! By ensuring your irrigation system is functioning optimally, you can guarantee your grass stays lush and vibrant throughout the hottest months. Here at Schendel Lawn and Landscape, we’re dedicated to helping you achieve a thriving summer lawn, and this guide will equip you with the knowledge and resources you need.
Spring Awakening: Preparing Your Irrigation System
Spring’s arrival often coincides with the activation of irrigation systems. However, if we already turned on your system in early spring, there’s a possibility the controller remained in the “off” position due to recent cold spells. A quick check is all it takes!
Locate your controller box, usually situated in your garage or near your house. Simply open the box and turn the knob to “auto” or “run” if necessary.
For those who haven’t had their irrigation system activated yet, no worries! We’ll be scheduling system turn-ons within the coming weeks and will notify you beforehand.
Fine-Tuning for Summer: Adjusting Your Water Schedule
As spring transitions into summer, the warmer days transform into scorching heat. This dramatic shift necessitates an adjustment to your irrigation schedule to ensure your lawn receives the optimal amount of water. To help you navigate this change, we’ve provided a breakdown of recommended watering times based on zone type:
- Spring (until mid-May): Aim for 2-3 watering sessions per week, with each zone receiving water for specific durations. Rotor zones should run for 20-25 minutes, spray zones for 5-10 minutes, and drip zones for 20-30 minutes.
- Summer: With the arrival of consistent hot weather (typically exceeding 80°F during the day), your watering frequency will likely increase to 3-4 sessions per week. Rotor zones should run for 30-45 minutes, spray zones for 10-15 minutes, and drip zones for 45 minutes.
Remember: These are general recommendations, and watering needs can vary based on several factors. Areas with significant shade will require less water compared to those bathed in direct sunlight. Similarly, lawns with a slope might need adjustments to prevent water runoff and ensure proper absorption. Early morning watering is crucial year-round, but especially during summer, as it minimizes water loss through evaporation.
